$HOME/.bashrc or $HOME/.bash_aliases (If you use .bash_aliases you need to

You would be better off using rsync and/or scp for this. Both are available

Getting the old commands to work would require finding their legacy

That is easiest to do from your router admin pages. If you leave the laptop
to use DHCP you will have an easier time if you use it on a different
wireless network (like at a NovaLUG meeting ;) )

Don't use LXDE enough to know. I will have a go this weekend.

That is correct. You must be root to do that. Most likely your nameserver
will be the same IP as your wireless router.

There should be an LXDE settings app where this can be done. It will come
under "Screen Saver" or in some cases "Power management"
