[Novalug] route take a very long time ( elongated )

first:
route -n    is fast
route -C    is slow
route      is slow.
( see below for IP info later )

I'm beginning to believe my problem is at the ISP's
end of the stick.  I won't try to fix his problem,
but for my own benefit, I'd like to see if there's 
any more basic troubleshooting I can do at my
end.

Symptom 1 :
Internet access over ppp stops.
Symptom 2 : only outgoing packaets made the modem light
blink, as in a ping
Symptom 3 : no incoming data at all is seen on the receive 
end ( the modem ).
Symptom 4:  In the tcpdump below, the appearance to me is that the
domains names are concatentated.  PLEASE CORRECT ME
if I'm reading the elongated names incorrectly.
i.e. 
 www.google.com.dynamic-dialup.coretel.net.

( but again, Nothing comes back - not even error messages )

This all seems to be layer 3-4 work.
Is there anything testable at layer 2 ?
