FYI: from earlier exchange:

 For Modems - the old types that
uses analog phone signals, you'll have RJ11 - the same type of plug just
a bit thinner (less wires). My cable modem has a RJ45 and a COAX plug,
one for each side -it's purpose is to transform signals from one form to
another.

I used to wonder- and listen -- took awhile
for the various concepts to take hold:

You have plug and jack.
You have male plug and female plug.
You have male jack and female jack.
You may have simply a male connector.
Or female connector.  Board connector, 
cable connector. and functional names:
ethernet connector, ethernet cable, power
connector, power cable, power plug, power jack.

In manuals, you cheat and say " the mating connector".

no, I didn't do all 2^n cases.. <grin>
