[Really OT] Did you ever have the nightmare about them taking away your
degree because you failed gym?

I had to get "humanities" courses and "social sciences" courses. Part of
the latter could be satisified by exam.

However one of the "social sciences" courses I took turned out to be one
of the best courses I had at the university. It was called "Man and
Natural Resources" and was a course through the Geography department
taught by a retired petroleum engineer named Daniel Lutens.

He taught a scientific approach to evaluating the impact of mankind on our
planet which has stayed with me ever since. Without the need for the
"breadth requirement" I would not have taken this course.

I satisified my "humanities" breadth requirement by taking three semesters
of symbolic logic through the philosophy department. That turned out to
be useful when I became addicted to computers. Also I had several
semesters of a series of courses about the paitings on Ancient Greek
Pottery which turned out to be as much about archeology as about art. so
I enjoyed that also.
