[Novalug] Linux on a chromebook - secure?

I'm thinking of dumping my tablet and taking step back in time to a small
laptop, a-la something like a "netbook" (boy did that term become
neanderthal fast).

Question is will Google be tracking me everywhere if I install, e.g.,
Ubuntu. One method is to use Crouton (Chromium OS Universal Chroot
Environment - the url was too long**). As I understand it, chrome is still
hanging around in the background or maybe Google has a "back door" tracker
/ monitor of activities / location?
