Some things have existed in parallel: rpm/deb, wayland/x,gnome/KDE etc,arch style init vs upstart vs sysVinit...
one of the gripes against systemd and it's cohorts is that they set up a dependency situation that is sort of all or,nothing,reaching down to the bootloader and up to the gui environments. Hey its just what I've heard. ..
