It looks like the server advertises support for DIGEST-MD5 and CRAM-MD5 
also:

250-AUTH DIGEST-MD5 PLAIN LOGIN CRAM-MD5
250-AUTH=LOGIN PLAIN

Perhaps my auth-unspecified client was trying one of those and failing? 
Also, I'm not sure about the difference between the AUTH and AUTH= lines.
