good point. Let me rephrase your question:

What is the linux distribution that you would recommend to someone who
doesn't know much about computers, who wants to run it just like they
are accustomed to doing with the systems they have at work (most likely
Windows, with support), or hear good things about (most likely, apple).

My reason for asking: I've been asked whether I might have a spare
computer to give away, to a high school student, preferably a laptop.
I have a system that now runs Ubuntu  12.04 LTS, which I may want
to replace at some time in the near future. So, what would I put on
this older system? Problem is, I may not be available to help the student,
since she's in another country.
