Precisely. It's an instrument (better, a precursor to an
instrument) of coercion (which my bosses used to use), and
deserves an appropriate response.
Upon receiving any such screed now, guessing the purpose,
I'd do at least one of three things: delete it, killfile it, a/o
delete the sender from my .addressbook. Most likely would be all
three. I might so inform the sender, but not often.
Dan's example is to me now a blessedly rare exception --
as my favorite T-shirt proclaims, "I don't want to, I don't have
to, you can't make me. I'M RETIRED." It seems to me that sending
such a message (or so marking one) is inherently insulting
outside a business context.
