I agree with you on that. To me one of the advantages of Linux is that it 
can keep an older machine useful and out of the trash until it is really 
dead. Even when they are recycled there are environmental and worker 
consequences that arise when the recycling is done by people not equipped 
to handle some toxic materials safely.

Obviously computers suffer from the "newest and neatest new thing" 
phenomenon so software is tweaked to handle faster and better hardware. 
But computers are also tools used in day to day activities and often those 
activities do not need to have improved tools.

The cycle of continual upgrading can but a burden on people who just 
want to use their computer to keep their business books, or write a 
novel or process their photographs and do not need to learn entire new 
programs that replace older programs because the OS changed.
