[Novalug] "Downgrading" Ubuntu release?

Alex,

That's my usual panic mode when the GUI on any of my boxen locks up,
usually when Firefox borks. I do a "ps -ef | grep irefo" to find the
firefox pid, and kill it to unbork the GUI. Then I can F7 back to the GUI
and restart the browser.

Looks like the machine in question does have a card, rather than
on-board graphics, and appears to be a Radeon 7500 (2002 vintage). I'm
fairly sure I can find the driver code, compile, install it, but the
thought occurs to me that perhaps I could find a more compatible card
instead. My geek DNA is pushing me to do the former, first.

FWIW, when I first hit the problem, I did the F2 thing to edit the
proper boot file from "quiet splash" to "text" and skip the GUI entirely.
Now it's back to the original plan. :P
