[Novalug] USB jack on Westell 6100 DSL MODE

So, my Westell 6100 (Verizon DSL) MODEM has a USB port beside the Ethernet
port. Docs say that the USB port can be used instead of the Ethernet
port. Docs say just to connect that port to a USB port on the computer.
Got that much. But does Linux (RedHat/Ubuntu/wotever) automagically make
use of the connection, or at least prompt me for input or ...?

Anyone here actually done this?

Reason: for rare use when I'm talking to a script kiddie about a DSL issue,
where I want the minimum amount of equipment attached, especially if/when
they want me to bridge the MODEM for wotever reason. I use my P-II laptop
for such emergency use, but it's plug-in ethernet card-thing and attached
USB cable are touchy and have to be held "just right" to maintain a
connection. If the laptop gets hacked or damages software-wise, it's an
easy re-install, since I don't really keep any data on it, other than
system stuff.
