By the below quote,

I meant to imply they were simply text files.  However you look at a
text file will work, cat(1), vi(1), more(1), less(1), etc.  If the
log has been compressed with gzip (ex. /var/log/messages-20140615.gz)
use the "z" variants, zcat(1), zless(1) ...
