[Novalug] NetworkManager clobbers resolv.conf

Neglected to say that I was running Raspbian "wheezy" & the files that
Peter mentioned are not present. I've configured NetworkManager as root &
specified that 10.0.1.1 be dns & search addresses but it still blows away
resolv.conf leaving the file contents that Peter listed.

I've been trying to use NetworkManager to test out different network
configurations. Some of the text-based examples are very confusing & I've
had little success with them. I'm using the Raspberry Pi as a headless
server & don't like to have to drag the HDMI TV & keyboard/mouse to it to
check out stuff.

One trick that works is: A second SD card with Raspbian on it can be
substituted for a card that I've hosed up the interfaces on. The main card
then will mount through an SD card reader. I can then restore the
interfaces file to get the main card back on the air. It's easier & faster
that shlepping gear around.

BTW why is logging in as root using a GUI considered dangerous? How else
would you use a GUI to do system configuration? Sometimes logging in as a
normal user would cause a administrator password request but other times
not.
