I'd say that this is indeed a Rite of Passage, but don't get your hopes
up too high. They could have explored what was really going on with the
compiler configuration and the bootstrapping process, but instead they
focused more on what it takes to get the job done.
Plus, the emphasis is on telling you exactly what commands to type,
rather than encapsulating them in a shell script or a Makefile, so you
have to cut and paste with a mouse.
What you get is similar to a Red Hat 9 minimal install.
There is a BLFS, where the B stands for Beyond, and perhaps they build X
and/or some more interesting stuff.
So Do It, and Learn What You Can.
