[Novalug] kernel upgrade needed to get rid of freezes and such in Ubuntu 12.4?

It's what I still think a pretty nice machine, with an AMD Phenom(tm) II
X4 945 Processor
cpu MHz : 800.000 cache size : 512 KB and 4 cores.
MemTotal: 3789644 kB, MemFree: 2512300 kB

I find it a little strange that there's no swap space: df gives

/dev/sda1 957433476 35498788 873293152 4% /
udev 1853116 4 1853112 1% /dev
tmpfs 757932 964 756968 1% /run
none 5120 0 5120 0% /run/lock
none 1894820 212 1894608 1% /run/shm

This is after a reboot 30 minutes ago...
