Besides the obvious technical things (smart reports it bad, it just
doesn't work, overheats), I go by the "if I am worried about it, it
needs to be replaced" reasoning. Given the general cost of drives, if I
have any concern I just replace them. Easier than loss of data or the
down time of recovering from backup.
