This worked for me with gedit and xubuntu.
(1) to change the font size in the display of the document being edited
(but NOT in the print out) for gedit:
open gedit
under edit menu choose Preferences (the last entry on the drop down edit
menu)
in the preferences window choose the Font & Colors tab.
click on the bar to the right of the "Editor Font" label
a new window opens - at the bottom is a slider bar for font size. select
the size you want either by sliding the bar with the mouse or bu using
the plus and minus buttons on the right.
click "Select" at the bottom.
(2) To change the size in the PRINTED document you use the File/Print
dialog under the File menu
Select Print, a window opens. Select the Text editor tab
under the column on the right: Fonts there is a button for Body
click on that
use the slider at the bottom to select the font size
click on Select
Then click on Print
A CAUTION
KEEP NOTES ON YOUR ORIGINAL SETTING!
KEEP NOTES ON WHAT YOU DO BECAUSE YOU MAY WANT TO UNDO IT!
For my system:
IF YOU DO NOT PRINT THE CHANGED DOCUMENT THE CHANGES DO NOT SEEM TO
BE SAVED SO IF YOU UNDO THE FONT SIZE IN THE File/Print dialog and do
not click on print, the next time you open gedit you will have the same
settings as you had before you changed the print out size in the
File/Print dialog.
However using the print preview seems to change the font size so you do
not have to actually print a page.
(3) When fooling around with these settings I initially open a simple page
with the words "this is a test" as the text and then tried out the setting
changes and print a sample before trying out my important manuscript.
