IPMI bypasses the operating system and uses a seperate controller chip on
the mainboard, called a BMC or Baseboard Management Controller, to do
everything from checking sensor readings to powering on and off the system.
It also can provide a serial console interface, and on some systems, a
web-based console (implementations can vary based on manufacturer).

I used it in the data center as part of my duties.
