does anyone have opinions on gel batteries for use with situations
that a car battery would work for?
One has been reccommended for use with our machine that powers the
artificial lure that we let our dogs chase (at 40 mph).
The motor for the lure machine is a Ford starting motor. The switch is a
thumb pressed switch and the machine's speed is controlled by clicking
and releasing the switch as needed to get the lure up to speed and
maintain it ahead of the dogs. Experimentation showed that dogs have great
accelerative powers and motors with less torque than an auto starting
motor could not get the lure accellerating rapidly enough.
For those interested here is a manufacturer of these systems.

Other people have said they are more likely to explode while being
charged. I have had car batteries explode when running a lure machine.
The battery is used on and off and may site for several weeks between
exercise sessions on our enclosed, heated porch on a wooden shelf. We
usually top off its charge a day before using it.
