Do you use any binary video drivers and update the kernel? Sometimes
the new drivers won't load correctly and you'll need to just do an
init 3 and recompile the driver for the new kernel, then quickly
reboot to reload the driver (or rmmod and then modprobe.. but a reboto
is easier).
