Back in the "dinosaur" ages, ie, before the 1980's, there were business cards and personal cards. These personal cards were also known as "Calling Cards".

When one made formal social visits, one would leave one's "Calling Card" with the host/hostess so one's presence could be officially acknowledged, often in writing.  There were very specific and 'arcane' rules to how this was done, based upon, event,  situation, one's status, and reason for attendance.  And yes, there were often butlers or staff who would take them.

These "Calling Cards" were different of sizes with different information based upon whether one was military, diplomat, civilian, male, female, married, married couple, single, etc. Usually there was not much more than one's name, rank/title and official job.  If that much.

For business cards, the "old style best" were engraved (raised lettering) on a good quality cream or white card stock.  You would pay for and receive the engraved plate that was used to print the cards. Virginia Press, 10608 Oliver Street Fairfax, Va, (703)273-1220, was the least expensive "old-style printer" that did this kind of work,  which I could find.  I do not know if they are still around, though.

Currently you can probably get 500 cards at a local stationary supply store for one-tenth the price of an engraved card.  And get them a lot faster as well.

Sheesh, now I feel really old :(
