[Novalug] RHN Satellite

Free software is not always the best of its class. When Oracle was released for Linux in 98 I installed it and also installed Postgres on the same Linux box. On some queries with subqueries (I think that's what it was) Postgres not only didn't perform as well as Oracle, it didn't complete them at all.

I know that was 14 years ago and Postgres must have improved, but have their relative positions changed?

Red Hat uses Postgres for Jboss Operations Network. I would assume they do not have an issue with using Postgres other than a technical one. Or possibly a business one, not in some nefarious way but perhaps Oracle is certified to be used in some environments where Postgres is not? Or maybe they coded to Oracle when they started the Satellite project and now it would be hard to migrate? Not worth it from a financial point of view?

There's a program in Debian called "vrms" - Virtual Richard M. Stallman. It goes through your packages and identifies anything not "Free". I know my Debian partition didn't come up completely clean. Binary blobs, graphics drivers, Flash players, Java JDKs.....who is not using a single one of these?

Then there's always the "don't fragment the movement" rationale, where criticising Red Hat is biting the hand that feeds us. There's some truth to that.

It'd be better to help Postgres (or whatever) become a better database than to snipe at Red Hat. Any of us could join their efforts if we were so inclined.
