Working on open source projects during college helps, if only to
un-learn some of the behaviors enforced in the lower-level classes.

Case in point: software engineering classes. Cue the "damn kids, get
offin' my lawn" moment, hit delete if you like.

My first three years of CS courses in undergrad were predictable in some
ways: Get caught working with other people on a project and all of you
automatically got a failing grade on grounds of academic integrity.
Then came software engineering 1 and 2, where we /had/ to work in groups
on everything. Only those of us who'd worked in the OSS community knew
how to do it (there were two or three of us).

As Douglas Adams is reputed to have said, "We are stuck with technology
when what we really want is just stuff that works."
