i gave up on linux for window interface for a while because of X.
keep in mind, i'm and old hand at this. think back on how X11 used
to be. it was such a PITA getting the windowing server i wanted.
i then started to use apple macosx. it's basically unix finely tuned
to it's hardware. it just worked. but, of course, i still didn't have
much a choice with my windowing system.
nowadays, i'm back in the fold using ubuntu. it also just works.
i don't think i've experienced any X problems since then. i also just
gave in and started using gnome as the ubuntu gnod intended me to.
luckily, i even managed to get the natty narwhal (11.04) to use gnome.
i did try unity for a while, but my threshold for pain was too low.
but that's another story.
