[Novalug] messed up by lucid "upgrade"

When the mysql process attempts to start it probably fails, and the key is to
find where the error message is going so you can interpret it. I would suggest
re-starting the mysql service and looking for the error message. You should be
able to re-start it by opening a commandline and typing the following:

/etc/init.d/mysql stop

and

/etc/init.d/mysql start

Then look at your mysql config file that you mentioned earlier and see if there
is a log file - it may be in /var/logs/mysql or somewhere else. You might also
see the error message if you type "dmesg" at the commandline.

Igor

some one in the thread suggests:

Simply create the file.

however i have not been able to figure out what is supposed to be in the
file.

i really have been doing a lot of googling on contents of mysqld.sock and
all I have found are statements that mysql will create the socket in
/var/run/mysqld/ when it starts up.

or I found instructions to run mysql_update except that mysql_update
exits with the error message that it cannot find :

/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

so it becomes a circular problem.

our dsl is slow because there is a humm on the phone line and verizon is
not going to be fixing it until Jan 6. However I have now downloaded an
install disk for Ubuntu Karmic and I am thinking of just downgrading my
lucid install - or reinstalling karmic in the second partition (the one
that currently has karmic in it and hope that the reinstall resets
the MBR so my grub screen comes back.

happy new year!!
