I had recommended rdesktop because I thought that the ESXi would be
accessible via Windows Remote Desktop, or whatever that is called.
Googled a little and it appears that is not the case. It seems you need
a client program that requires windows to manage things. Linux CLI seems
not to be able to create VMs for instance.

There is a client for iPad
http://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn/vsphere/ipadclient
don't remember if you have an iPad. I think it also does not allow
creating VMs.

You may need to run a VM with Windows on your Linux client machine to
run the client and create your ESXi VMs. I know that sucks but that's
what it looks like.
