[Novalug] Strange Disk Problem

Firstly, are you really going to try to setup RAID 1 across 12 drives? I'd investigate maybe RAID 10. To probe the drives try hdparm (usually in /sbin). hdparm -I /dev/sdX gets you a ton of info if I remember correctly.
