[Novalug] Recommend an external drive enclosure and drives for plug-based NAS

I like the options at addonics.com.

This is something I may try myself soon. It uses 2.5" laptop disks instead of 3.5". I could be talking out of my ass but I *think* 2.5" is more reliable than 3.5" and there could be other advantages to using the smaller form factor (I'm not an expert this is a hunch). Somebody more wise on this list I'm sure can say what the pros/cons are of 2.5" vs 3.5" for regular consumer grade products (I think Brian's comments here could be helpful if he has some).

Good luck.

As a result of the recent thread on small and plug computers, I purchased a Tonidoplug and have started playing with it.  So far, it looks like it will do what I want as a NAS front end, including replacing a Western Digital Worldbook NAS that has begun misbehaving.

I'm looking for recommendations for multi-drive drive cases and drives.  The Tonido folks reviewed on their blog a drive case by Icy Dock - 4-bay x 3.5" SATA hot-swappable.  About $240 at several on-line vendors.  Comes with a USB 2.0 connection I can use with the Tonidoplug or other PCs, as well as eSATA that I can use with newer PCs and the Guruplug I've also ordered.  I haven't purchased bare drives in a long time, so would like comments, preferably informed, on who's making decent drives these days.  I see NewEgg has some prices in the $80-$90 range for 3.5" 1TB drives by Samsung, WD, and I think Seagate and Hitachi.  Or should I bite the bullet and get something bigger?  Raw drive speed is not as important as I'll be limited by 100MBit ethernet and initially USB 2.0 speeds.

I'd say I want at least a 2-bay unit, thinking of populating it with 2 drives and possibly a 3rd for off-site or at least removable backup; so hot-swap may be a requirement.
