Actually, that's what DeviceMapper is designed to do, removing the
separate MD layer. There is even RAID-5 support in dmraid. But
there are some greater support issues at work. In reality, software
RAID-5 is not something I really trust, in any OSes. But that's another
story.
ZFS goes one step further and combines volumes, RAID and filesystem
into one. It's what NetApp hardware solutions have done for years as
well with WAFL.

LVM has its advantages, and so do MD disks. But it turns out that if you
want to do RAID5 you need them both, and yet Bryan has cautioned against
using them together. How about merging the two somehow so I don't need both?
