[Novalug] Advice on Training

For reasons not worth explaining here, I am tasked to help support our
scientific lab's IT needs. I have no formal training in IT. I am a
scientist. I fell into this role because I care about our lab's
efficiency and success, and I am a geek so I like doing it.

We have a neglected server that is meant to host web pages and databases
and my supervisor has green-lighted me to get some training to that
end. The server currently runs IIS under Microsoft Server 2003 and our
users primarily work with Filemaker Pro. I would really like to change
that server to Apache under Linux and move to SQL.

I'm pretty good with database design and implementation, but not with
SQL and web apps.

Can anybody suggest where I should start looking for training? I
personally feel that my weak points are server administration and web
application/server deployment.

I'm sure there are CS and EE folks out there who are rolling their eyes
right now, but a 4 year program at VT is not an option. (Go ahead and
send your grumblings, though, as long as they're witty. I can take it.)

Thanks in advance.

Mark
