I've been following this thread with interest - but not had the energy
to really become part of it. I really think that Rich's suggestion is a
big step in the right direction. Based upon what I experienced last
year, we need to coordinate the message - even define what that message
is. And from all the input here, it's clear we are not "message less" -
we just have way too many balls in the air.

As to Jay's suggestions, I think if you had a meeting with a client,
this would be the way to do it. Very factual, structured and well
argued. However, in a conference environment I don't see this as an
option. We have very little time to catch the attention - we need
something to "wheel them in" so to speak, and then we may have 1-2
minutes. So we're basically down to "buzz words" and any promotion
should be based on those, to be recognizable to anyone who saw the
interview.

I like the original idea - the solutions approach. Show that FOSS
provides viable alternatives; mention where these alternatives have been
implemented with success (without being too specific) - and Rich's
initial posting was a good example of the many initiatives out there.
There were so many, we'll probably have to only select a few chosen ones
to focus on, so we can answer questions and setup a demo.

I would suggest that we try to focus the "talking points" about the
misconceptions and critiques that the commercial world has against
adopting FOSS. Claims of lack of support, not "robust", "small systems
only" and "too expensive in the long run". Those subjects can be
answered independently but they could also be done in reference to a
specific implementation - if we can find an organization willing to
share this information with us?
