When you built the VM prior to installation, what did you pick in the
Storage category? The version of VirtualBox I'm running on my laptop
(v3.1.6_OSE r59338, packaged by the Arch Linux project) offers three
options, PIIX3, PIIX4, and ICH6.
It's possible that the copy of Windows 7 doesn't have installation
drivers for the VM you allocated. Either try a different one (pick the
VM, Settings, Storage, IDE Controller) or look into slipstreaming the
right drivers into the Win7 installation disk image (which might take a
few tries but works like a charm once you get it right).
