It's low volume, low noise, very high signal.

Another thing that can be done is have the "reply to" set to not
only the original poster, but the main list as well.  That way it's
still "discussed" on the main list, and responses sent to the
original poster.  But then the original poster just makes the
"summary" post to the Q+Sum-only list.

It's one of the reasons I always hit "Reply-To-All."  Intelligent
list managers are smart enough or offer the option to check if
the list member was already in the recipient list or not.
There are other strategies as well.

The idea here is that while the "regulars" want their "free-for-all"
list, new members may not.
