[Novalug] bios checksum errors and hardware problems

I've started getting BIOS checksum errors
and wondering if the battery is going
over the years, or something else.

Power supply and disk light errors,
plus noise leaking out the speakers
as powered down and some time after.

USB wiring has been suspected
since needed help wiring the mobo/ ps
little pins on build.

I put a bike helmet light in to charge
on the second port (so battery sending
current / charge the other way?
most would be a sink, this might be a source
at times?)

Had a lightening storm a while back,
and was grateful the machine booted,
but loud pop sound later, and other
issues described making me think
about upgrade paths, maintenance/
repair and fears of lack of continuity
of service (i.e. machine breaking, what next?)

lost gkrellm eth0 activity display,
but other eth2 (to printer) still works.

and later cable model lights not reliable
(related to later 7 cable vans?)

so there's a question in there somewhere ;-/
maybe i'm just starting to see about troubleshooting
and listing symptoms/ starting a shopping list...
