For what it's worth, I've been using WINE to play a couple of games
(Starcraft, and Diablo I and II) for about three years now, and I've
never experienced what you describe. Surprizon's VZAccess utility also
worked pretty well (though I haven't needed it since I got hold of the
phone number of my cellmodem).
What kind of hardware do you have? What distro? What revision of WINE?
How was it compiled?
