That's not quite the definition of raw I grew up with.

Raw refered to a disk OR a partition that did not have a file system
built upon it, was managed by an application rather than the OS,
was not mounted, and was accessed via "raw" I/O; i.e. direct disk
access by the application rather than going through the OS caching
and buffering mechanisms.
