Tried that, while I had the XP laptop booted. Result :
one more blank white screen -- both on Opera and on Firefox.

Incidentally, there's a weird new trouble. The young
Friendly Local Alpha Plus Technoid (yFLAPT) did come by, and
solved some of it, including a thing I hadn't mentioned yet --
all my machines do connect, just not to my Comcast account. Jo's
in the basement did not (I haven't looked yet this morning.)

I could ssh into it, su to root, and run yum update --
which actually worked. But I couldn't connect with a browser to
anything, and I couldn't ssh from there to beartooth.info (b.i),
where Jo also does most of her email. Otoh, I could get into the
Linksys WRT54G2.

Steven thought to check the DNS entries in
system-config-network, and they did come up different on Jo's
machine and mine. Either right before or right after that, he
moved the ethernet cable to her machine out of the ethernet
switch, where it's been for two or three years, directly to the
router.

Then we copied the DNS entries from up here onto her
machine; we also got into b.i from up here, got its IP, and tried
ssh to that. From the way it asked the password, I spotted that
we had to ssh to Tsalagi@ that IP; then she could get into her
email, which is the main thing she does online.

But we never did manage to make any browser down there
connect to any site before Steven had to leave; I'll go check
presently, because he thought (if I understood him aright)
that DNS propagation might be involved.

And he still says I'd be worse off with any of the other
choices available here. <sigh>
