[Novalug] Experience with OSS Accounting Apps. similar to or like Quickbooks?

Justin,

I run a small business. The accounting system is Quickbooks Pro.
It runs on a Mac: I stayed away from Windows. The mac version is
slightly different than, and lamentably incompatible with, the
Windows version that everyone else uses. There is no linux version,
although you'd think that the core of a native mac version should run
on linux: only the GUI might not.

For us the hardest part was to set up the Quickbooks system so that
it would comply with the accounting rules of the Defense Contract
Audit Agency (DCAA). I have no idea why these people don't offer you
a pre-approved version, and instead let you do it by yourself, or
maybe with the help of the vultures err... consulting firms that
offer courses in how to set up a DCAA-compliant Quickbooks system.

The reason that we went with Quickbooks, and converted an already-owned
mac to business use is that it's absolutely essential to have an
accounting system that accountants know and feel comfortable with.
Back then, when we had to do this, I looked at some unix-based
accounting systems (whose names I forgot): they were too complicated
for me.

Since everything now runs on Quickbooks we might not even convert
to a FOSS system running under linux. However, I might have tried
to convert my accounting person to use a linux computer if linux
had come with a DCAA-compliant FOSS accounting application,
or if you could get one.

HTH,

Nino
