Sorry for the cross posting
to both DC and NOVA.
I usually keep my ignorance to
NOVA closer to where I live
and away from
DC webnewbie issues ;-/

So November came and went,
I took part of the early holiday/
pre thanksgiving time and started
upgrading my desktop machine
to Fedora Core 12 64 bit
(the likely lightning impaired,
power supply LED lights flickering,
even when off,
plus audio noise leaking out of desktop
with issues previously mentioned)
and here is some of the process
and remaining mysteries
for those that care to chime in...

I did a dvd iso upgrade
(FC10->11 was preupgrade)
found 4 gig download space
and then burn dvd
k3b not giving successful burns
(OR SOMETHING...)
for some time, thought it was media,
one dvd burned didn't even self check,
so used the other one...
other cdrs giving errors thought is was
the malformed cdr pack...

yum erase
lots of stuff to make some room,
I've been collecting interesting packages
but not using them, removed a lot
so got an amazing 20 Gig back.

Upgrade took way longer than expected...

several times the system seemed to hang,
looking behind the stuff, it was doing things
(fschk? se relabeling?),
and reminding me, nay nagging me,
a clean install is the recommended approach...

yum erase MANY .fc11.rpm packages
thinking this is junk left behind
from the previous version,
or rpmdb corruption,
but later discovering that some
dependencies are still fc11 versions...
go figure...

Still various conflicts
seedit
policycore*
and other frightening security related stuff
have been getting an error on audio type
entropy things on fc11...

and yum even broke a few times,
so wondering about the planet.fedora.org
or similar article about rpmdb rebuilding
(he even says, not for the timid,
or similar...)

switching between command line
yum update guessing what doesn't
conflict,and software update
yumex NextGen says no network connection
(usb cable modem not blessed?)
and doesn't show any new available packages
and spent several full (beyond full)
days mucking with packages, as very slow
process...

attached are the terminal output file
showing which conflicting
seedit
selinux*
lm_sensors
ruby something

all liveable assuming no foreign
nationals are guests on my system,
though I don't have beyond personal
info here...

Currently using the system,
Firefox scripts make it almost unusable
un enabled google labs experimental stuff,
seems to be ad &/or flash blocking
culprits, yet unresolved...

secondary browsers
midori
seamonkey
(same mozilla? code base, but less bells & whistles)
come in handy to connect to some things...

dvd::rip
ripping the paul thorn
(from Joan Osborn concert) bonus dvd
Dependency Hell...
It's a perl program from exit1.org
but rpmfusion has yum package
for it.
rar dependency, dvd::rip doesn't want
rar version over 3.0,
exit1.org's 32 bit bin executable doesn't help
on a 64 bit OS, near as I can tell,
transcode, ffmpeg, etc
non free stuff expected with video mickey mouse
type hollywood dvds

re: previous thanksgiving holiday thread,
likely off topic and way after last reply,
yes, I'm thankful for LUGs,
and no, I don't hate you guys/ gals.
and $computers can be frustrating at times
as my upgrade with lots of baggage can
recently attest

so if people have suggestions,
but not flaming and need clarification of this
mess, please let me know, on list or off.
