But it won't destroy the data on the parts of the disk that haven't been 
reduced to ribbons.  They'll still be there, easily able to be retrieved by 
one of those services for people who accidentally formatted their drives, 
provided they've got a scanning electron microscope.  Or if you prefer, 
readable by the government since they certainly have a pile of those.

Really, smelting is the way to be 100% certain.
