I have used AT&T's 3G/EDGE broadband data service for the past 2 years. When I first started using their data plan, AT&T's only requirement was you had to have a 3G/EDGE capable phone with bluetooth and this allowed one to tether a phone with a laptop. Prior to January 2008, they offered an unlimited data plan for about $60/month with 128KB/sec data transfer speeds. Since January, AT&T has changed their data service plans and advertise data transfer speeds of 500-750KB/sec but the service can only be added if you have a compatible PDA or LaptopConnect device. I recently purchased a PDA from AT&T and will add the LaptopConnect service within a week or so for an upcoming trip. I will see if I obtain >500KB/sec data transfer speeds. I am not sure about the other cell phone companies but AT&T allows their customers to add and remove the LaptopConnect service to their plan at a prorated rate.
