I would suggest Ubuntu also. When I started with Linux I tried 
RedHat and Mandrake and I lost the system whenever I reinstalled. I even 
hired a local college guy who helped me and got a lot of books about 
RedHat. I have had a much much easier time with Ubuntu. There is excellent 
online support and I have been able to install it on a number of 
different systems both single boot and multiboot.
