 	Actually, thanks to the (as usual, invaluable) help here, 
I found an easier quicker way. Knowing that the T42 comes with 
the serial port disabled in the BIOS. I enabled it. (I think I 
reported that already.)

And knowing you can get cards that permit a serial connection. I 
got one from my local shop; it looks like an ethernet card, 
except that it has a funny little six-inch cable with a serial 
plug on one end and an ethernet plug on the other.

         I got the Maptech software to talk to one GPS last night; 
I'll try the Garmin again today, and also the DeLorme. Stay
