a "critical thinking applied to global warming and evolution" bill.

Sadly the US has had a history of these things - here is a link about the
1897 Indiana Legislature's "Pi Law":

The lack of knowledge of science is not just a problem in the deep south -
I happen to be a paleontologist and have a number of real fossils I
collected my self sitting around the house to attest to the reality of the
fossil record, and I live in Maryland (not your typical deep southern
state despite being south of the Mason-Dixon line). My dog's vet, an
excellent vet and an intelligent and educated man does not believe in
evolution via natural selection. we have interesting, serious discussions
when we talk about the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria. he sees
their emergence as an example of satan's actions in an imperfect world.

One of my paleontology professors at Berkeley, Dr Donald Savage, was
married to a woman who did not believe in Darwinian evolution or in
the geologically accepted extreme age of the earth.

In addition, in my experience it is not uncommon for people trained in
fields that have little geology or biology in them, such as engineering
and computer science, not to believe in Darwinian evolution or climate
change.
