I've added these two entries to menu.lst, one each for SuSE and Fedora:

title openSUSE 10.2 Igor failsafe
    root (hd0,2)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18.8-0.7-default root=/dev/hda3 vga=normal showopts ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off noresume nosmp noapic maxcpus=0 edd=off 3
    initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18.8-0.7-default

title fedora 8 Igor failsafe
    root (hd1,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.25.4-10.fc8 root=/dev/sda1 vga=normal showopts ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off noresume nosmp noapic maxcpus=0 edd=off 3
    initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.25.4-10.fc8.img

Neither succeeded. Fedora's messages seemed the same as my normal boot entry.
Certainly the end part was the same as I posted yesterday. Only recognizable
difference was font size due to the different vga= options.

OpenSuSE was different. There were two "fatal" messages about inserting modules
for "thermal" and "fan". Here is one:

Fatal: Error inserting thermal (/lib/modules/2.6.18.8-0.7-default/kernel/drivers/acpi/thermal.ko): no such device

And later I got this:

  Loading edd
Bios EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25: 0 devices found
  Edd information not available

and shortly thereafter:

Waiting for device /dev/hda3 to appear ....... not found
  exiting to /bin/sh

And it dropped me to a shell prompt.

Unfortunately I'm running a usb keyboard and it was not functional
at this point. I can boot with a ps2 keyboard if there are some
specific explorations to make.
