I would start off by installing SuSE 11 and play with the new features..

If you have accel Gfx you'll get to enjoy a nice treat in 3D if this is 
to your liking. But then that is true now or most distros ;)

I would strongly recommend you try to do something you want to do ( E.g. 
images, videos, 3D, audio etc ) and then work to help improve the 
project of your choosing with constructive feedback.

One thing that helps you grow a lot in a short time and helps this group 
is to give a presentation on your experience in one of the meetings with 
a program/project you worked on/with. E.g. explain how to set it up, 
what the normal usage is and what the advanced features are.

This way you'll also learn OpenOffice or KOffice if you do your 
presentation this way :)
