I still use Pine, and say... if it's not broken don't fix!
It can display HTML email, and has filters. When people send attachments I
just save them out to a private web accessable directory. I don't get that
many attachments though.
I run 2 or 3 IRC clients and 3 copies of PINE under sreen. I can connect
from work or home, take over the session from both, and it's fast and
efficient.
I've also used it with ssh client on the BlackBerry, but it's a bit rough
since the blackberry ssh client that I use (the free one) is slow.
Apple's built in mail application gets all the love from the Mac fanboys.
I get to support it a bit at work, and when it breaks, the fixes you see
on the net are amusing. Basically, it breaks and no one knows why, and in
different manners, and the solutions aren't really solutions. It does
little that is impressive or new.
If you want a porky fat desktop client, there is the Mozilla Project's
Thunderbird. It's okay.
