Granular urea ( a fertilizer) makes a good snow melt that does not
rust cars or harm plants. And it is quite cheap. You can get it at farm
and garden supply stores.
There are other non-sodium chloride ice melts available and the ones I
have used seem to be more effective per pound than sodium chloride.
Also ashes spread on ice will help melt it - both the black color
absorbing heat from the sun and the salts in the ashes.
Somewhere have a picture taken up here in March of 2003 where we had so
much snow that the cars became invisble lumps with projecting rear view
mirrors. We had to hire someone with a back hoe to dig the driveway
out.
Mostly we get ice and very little snow.
This is MD around 50 miles N of DC.
In California (my birth state) they maintain special reservations for
the snow - these are referred to as "The Mountains" and when you
want to see snow you can either look up at it from the warm
lowlands or you can drive up there.
