Hmm, I set up ssh and dyndns recently, so port 22 was open, but how does one get p0wn3d?  I did not have any default passwords and kept the system updated?

Connected to internet? If so, I recommend tripwire + iptables or similar.

Personally, I would burn a copy of the data I cared about and install
from scratch, JIC there you were p0wn3d
